Open call for analogue photo submissions
The Civil Non-Profit Company "Balkaniko", which is active in the field of art and especially in photography, is going to organize the 4th Analog Photography Festival in Athens. The purpose of the Festival is to bring together creators who love to express themselves through analog photography and to take them on a journey through a series of activities. Within the framework of the Festival, a central exhibition will be held, consisting of black and white and color photographs that have been produced exclusively by the analog method, both during shooting (negative or positive film) and during their printing.
To this end, it addresses an open call to photographers and artists who use the photographic medium, to create a photographic exhibition of an exclusively analogue nature, on the theme "Self-portrait in the age of the digital ego".
In the age of social networks, constant self-exposure and digital representation of the self, the self-portrait has been transformed. From an act of introspective imprinting of the self, it often becomes a tool for confirmation, image consumption, and even identity construction. This is because the use of the medium of photography has expanded to completely different levels, which allow the creator, who is usually not a professional, let alone an amateur photographer, to quickly and immediately self-promote.
Analog photography, with the naturalness and uniqueness of its material, contrasts with the intangible reproduction of the digital "I". The self-portrait on film is not just an image. It is a declaration of presence, an act of conscious choice. The use of film requires thought, time, while leaving room for the artist's personal expression.
The theme of the open call of the 4th Analog Photography Festival in Athens invites participants to explore the relationship between the analogue and digital self, the concept of identity and authenticity, memory, trace, alteration or multiplicity of the self. Self-portrait doesn't have to be literal. It can be fragmentary, indirect, staged, abstract, symbolic.
The photographs selected from the open call will be presented in the fall of 2026 in an exhibition space to be announced soon.
Entries and photographic material should be sent no later than May 15, 2026.
